EGYPT
My dream is finally coming true. I am taking my first trip to Egypt in few days. My stomach flutters at the thought. I've always wanted to see the vast desert, the pyramids and sphinx that stood for thousands of years, the monuments and temples etched with beautiful hieroglyphs...what can I say, I'm in love with a place I've never seen before.
There are few choice books that have steered further and further into my slight obsession for Egypt of old times...
Do check them out and perhaps you might find yourself equally drawn to the civilization who celebrated life as equally as death.
Some recommended historical Fictions. I love historical fictions since you get to see history as well as live in a dream.
Ramses and other series by Christian Jacq
Especially check out the Ramses series. Incredible story about Ramses II, the fictionalized history of the magic, the battles, timeless love story of that era.
Fictional history of era of Egypt controlled by Hitites by Wilbur Smith
Lots of action, adventure, magic as well as love stories
Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George
Also made into TV mini-series. The story told by Cleopatra of her life.
Mystery novels set in Egypt
The Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters
Set in Late 19th century and early 20th century Egypt. The adventures of archeologists Amelia Peabody, her husband and her son in Egypt of old.
Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
A classic mystery novel by Agatha Christie. Less to do with archeology and Egyptian history, but still interesting. Also made into a movie.
Action movies set in Egypt
The Mummy
The Mummy returns
Two movies set in Egypt of early 20th century. Great recreation scenary, great action although a bit hard to believe at points.
A good travel guide
Egypt guide by Lonely Planet
Documentaries and real facts
Since this list getting longer by the minute, I will make this section little short. For more info, please ask me.
For documentaries on Egypt, the great sources are:
The National Geographic Books and DVDs on Egypt (there are tons!)Discovery channel DVD series on Egypt
Any suggestions and comments for those Egypt lovers?
